Geranium Grandeur

and what they can teach us . . .

Sit with me a while in my garden and we’ll have a cup of tea together. I want to tell you about my new crop of geraniums. Their brightness overwhelms me for they are certainly plants that make their own statement. The blooms of both velvety red and white, against lush green leaves give me a certain pride of accomplishment as I watch them make their way along the garden fence. Only yesterday, I noticed buds from my sturdy plants pushing through the slats of the garden fence. Some were blooming happily on the outside of the garden. Couldn’t stay put, had to find new territory to explore, I guess.

Growing geraniums sort of reminds me of growing a family. A family produces a continuous line – like my geraniums but not exactly the same. A family requires strong roots, the result of tender early nurturing, and families experience the joy of seeing their young mature and begin to take their place in the world, which might involve exploring other territories as the geranium buds accomplished as they pushed their way, with determination,to the other side of the fence. This can be healthy, when exploring brings new areas of pleasure and productivity to their lives.

We had given our blessing as our children embarked on career pathways suited just for them and soon after, we were presented with a new son and daughter through a double wedding of our two children Yes, we saw our family exploring new territories and to our delight involved in a life style that suited their talents and aspirations.

You see, we learn quite a bit about life in general in our flower garden as we work among the plants and watch them grow and develop. They teach us that change is inevitable, but with change come new maturity, adventures and opportunities. Do you believe that flowers speak? They just told me so.

We had given our blessing as our children embarked on career pathways, then embraced a new daughter-in-law and son-in-law to see our family expand. That was only the beginning.
