I decided to go to the annual Covered Bridge Festival held each October in my area. They have very interesting flea market stands sprinkled in the little towns around the county and if you have lots of time to browse, it can be a very fun day just to shop for interesting items such as antiques or novel accessories for the home.
On that bright October day while passing the quaint covered bridges I came across a huge flea market in the little town of Mansfield. Among my findings I spotted a beautiful tapestry. It was so exquisite and professional looking, then to my astonishment, I noticed it priced at only $7.00.
I examined it carefully to see that it had no soiled areas. Much to my delight, it didn’t. The only dubious note was the back of the piece had frayed edges, loosely woven threads seeming to go nowhere and colors matted together with little design. But looking again at the beauty that first attracted my attention, I decided I couldn’t go far wrong with my $7.00 and headed for the cashier.
At a later time, I took it to the local picture frame shop and carefully selected just the right border and frame for a perfect display.
When I returned for the finished product my friend at the shop, equally impressed with its beauty, inquired where I had purchased such a lovely tapestry. I’m sure she thought I had given an large amount of money for it. I explained I had found it for $7.00 at a Covered Bridge flea market and she was amazed.
I have thought so often of that incident, for the tapestry piece is a fine example of our experience of life itself. When we go thru life, we are looking for tangible evidences that make good sense of our experiences, but sometimes we see only the loose weaving that we cannot understand. Instead of a hints of a design for the future there sometimes can be little to indicate a way. This is where trust must come in.
Trust that the side we are viewing is in the hands of the Almighty Creator. He has a purpose that will create an outcome of more beauty than we could ever imagine if we depend on his creative hand for our purpose.
Life’s Tapestry
God’s weaving patterns for our life
Some gray, some green, some blue.
Some crimson red, so bold and bright
Then a lesser hue.
We do not understand the plan that our Creator makes.
It seems to make no sense at all the twists and turns He takes.
But hidden there among the work
Lies a plan of hidden splendor,
For God Himself selects each step
To establish His endeavor.
And then one day the work is turned
And looking on we see
A beauty never thought about
When we trust His plan, you see.
